Lake Merritt is a tidal lagoon in the middle of the city. The 1991 Oakland Hills firestorm destroyed about 3,000 homes, and the area was rebuilt to newer codes.

West Oakland has some of the oldest Victorian houses in the East Bay. In multi-unit buildings each apartment usually has its own meter and panel, often in a shared basement. Know which panel is yours before the electrician arrives. Many older homes have raised wood foundations with a crawl space or basement.

Utilities here may shut off power during high fire-risk wind events, so backup batteries and generator hookups have become common requests. Rockridge, Temescal and Glenview have many Craftsman bungalows and brown-shingle houses.

Utilities, permits and licensing

In California, licenses for electrical contractors come from the Contractors State License Board, and electricians working for them need state certification. Ask the electrician to label any breakers they touch. A clearly marked panel saves time on every future repair.

EBMUD supplies water, about 90 percent of it from the Mokelumne River watershed in the Sierra Nevada. Hillside streets in Montclair are narrow and winding. Wastewater from homes here goes to EBMUD's main wastewater treatment plant near the Bay Bridge, and permits run through the City of Oakland Planning and Building Department. BART runs through Downtown, Fruitvale, Rockridge and West Oakland.
