Cambridge homes, up close

Much of East Cambridge grew up around factories near the Charles River and Lechmere. Many older homes heat with boilers feeding radiators.

Water travels from Stony Brook to Fresh Pond through an underground conduit about 7.7 miles long. Older buildings may get hot water from the same boiler that provides heat, through an indirect tank or a coil. That changes who you call when it fails.

Sediment and hard winters both shorten tank life. Flushing a tank once a year helps it last. Fresh Pond has supplied Cambridge drinking water since 1856.

Local rules before you book

Electric heaters draw power from Eversource, and gas models rely on Eversource. Either way, a replacement in Cambridge typically needs a permit through the Inspectional Services Department. In Massachusetts, water heater work is done by plumbers or gas fitters licensed by the state board for those trades.

What people ask us

Why is my hot water running out fast?

Sediment buildup, a failing element on an electric unit or a broken dip tube are common reasons. A tank that is too small for the household can also be the cause.

What is the relief valve for?

The temperature and pressure relief valve releases water if the tank gets too hot or pressurized. It should never be capped or plugged.

Which parts of Cambridge can you help with?

Our network reaches Neighborhood Nine, The Port, Agassiz and West Cambridge and the rest of Cambridge (02138, 02139, 02140, 02141, 02142). Whether a pro can come depends on their schedule, and we will let you know quickly either way.

Is it normal for a water heater to make popping noises?

Popping or rumbling usually means sediment at the bottom of the tank. Flushing can help, but older tanks may be near the end of their life.

If you rent, a short written note to your landlord now can save a lot of back and forth later.
