Utilities, permits and licensing

Nevada requires electrical contractors to be licensed by the Nevada State Contractors Board, which has an online license search. Panel upgrades, new circuits and service changes usually need a permit from the Las Vegas Department of Building and Safety, and an inspection may be required before walls are closed up.

What Las Vegas housing means for electrical work

Treated wastewater is returned to Lake Mead, which helps stretch the valley's Colorado River supply. NV Energy provides electricity and Southwest Gas provides natural gas.

About 90 percent of the Las Vegas Valley's water comes from Lake Mead. Air conditioning carries much of the load in homes here, and an aging panel or undersized circuit often shows up first when the AC and dryer run together.

Air conditioning carries most of the summer load, and an aging panel often shows its limits on the hottest afternoons. Nevada requires a contractor license for most jobs of $500 or more.

Before the visit

Note the brand of your panel if the label is readable, since some older panels are handled differently.

When it is time for a pro

You may want a electrician if you notice any of these:

  • Outlets that are warm or don't work
  • Flickering lights
  • Buzzing from a panel or switch

Quick answers

What is a GFCI outlet?

It cuts power fast when it senses current leaking to ground, which protects you near water. Kitchens, baths, garages and outdoor outlets usually need them under current code.

Which parts of Las Vegas can you help with?

Most likely. We cover Summerlin, Downtown Las Vegas, Centennial Hills and Arts District and other parts of Las Vegas, across 89101, 89102, 89104, 89106, 89107 and others. If no one is available, you will hear that from us up front.

Can I add outlets to an older room?

Usually. An electrician will check whether the circuit can handle more load or whether a new circuit is needed.

Why does my breaker keep tripping?

Usually an overloaded circuit, a short or a ground fault. Unplug things and reset once. If it trips again with nothing plugged in, stop resetting it and call an electrician.

A clear description and a couple of photos go a long way toward a quick and accurate answer.
